IRWIN CAR AND EQUIPMENT ACQUIRES TRACTION MOTOR SERVICE
Irwin, PA, March 31, 2014 – Irwin Car and Equipment, which engineers and manufactures custom heavy-duty material handling equipment for a wide range of industries and applications, has purchased Traction Motor Service (TMS), a full-service railroad motor repair center based in Irwin, PA. TMS specializes in the electro-mechanical repairing, rebuilding, rewinding and remanufacturing of AC and DC traction motors and generators used in mainline, short line, mass transit, captive industrial rail, heavy manufacturing and scenic railroad environments. TMS’s other services include machining, computer balancing, rotor repair, core loss analysis, truck assembly and surplus equipment sales.
“This transaction strengthens our ability in the industrial, rail and mining markets to rebuild and repair drive trucks with traction motors, captive industrial rail cars and locomotives, as well as idler trucks,” says William (Bill) Baker, president and CEO of Irwin Car and Equipment. “By integrating TMS’s experience and production capabilities with our operations, we are able to service more than 30 types of motors. Irwin’s acquisition of TMS is the latest in a string of purchases that has helped the company remain a single-source supplier of rail- and rubber tire-based material handling equipment, and related products and services. Over the past 15 years, Irwin has also bought TDT, a manufacturer of rock dusters and belt clamps; Track Switch Systems from IMPulse; the Energy Products Division from Schroeder Industries; Atlas Car; Phillips Mine & Mill; HDT (AGVs); and Lubick Trailers.
